Maxeen Kim Photography, How to Prepare for Your Photo Shoot, Hyde Park, Love Shoot, Couple Shoot, Destination Photographer

Since I started my business there has been a couple of questions that have come up over and over again from clients, probably the most popular being ‘What should I wear for my shoot?’. It’s a really good question and today I’ve decided to write a full post on how to prepare for your photo shoot as I have so much to tell you! And the best part? The information I’m sharing can be applied to any type of shoot you have booked.

It all starts with preparation…

Ever wondered why wedding photos generally look so lovely as a whole set of images? The secret’s in the planning.

The couple have spent time planning a colour scheme or theme and their outfits. In the case of the bride, she’s planned hair, make-up and jewellery too. All these things come together to create a beautiful atmosphere, along with amazing decor and the couple themselves looking their best – and when you look your best you feel confident and happy, all of this making for gorgeous photos.

Now you may be thinking ‘Yes, but I don’t have the time.’ Yes of course, I don’t expect you to decorate and style your whole shoot (you can if you want and have the time to but it’s not essential). I’m a believer in the concept of keeping it Simple & Stylish! Below I’ve broken down a list of things to think about when planning your shoot. The planning doesn’t have to take you long but a little bit of thought goes a long way. In addition, I’m sharing images from Leigh and Carl’s couple shoot which took place 2 years ago. These two are the perfect example of the following principles put into practice –  and the results are beautiful!

Colour Palette

When I was growing up, everyone did family photos in white tops and jeans. In principal this concept worked as all the images looked good as a set but it didn’t really allow for you as an individual to show a bit of your personality. By picking a colour palette, it frees you up to wear whatever you feel confident and comfortable in. Something that’s really you! In the case of Leigh and Carl, they opted for a maroon/pink, black and white palette with Carl in a pair of jeans. Generally you can get away with wearing jeans regardless of the set of colours you choose.

Location & Weather

Sunshine is always great for shoots. So if you’re pretty sure there will be sun on the day you are wanting, jump at the chance of booking your shoot for then. But never fear if you end up with an overcast day. The clouds act as diffusers and help create even light.

In terms of location, pick somewhere beautiful for your shoot. The beach, a field, a park, a beautiful manor house… Leigh and Carl picked a sunny day in Hyde Park for their shoot. Outdoor locations are always great as there is just so much to work with.

Hair & Make-Up

It’s always a good idea to wear more make-up than usual. If you are booking a shoot, it’s worth the little extra time to apply additional mascara and eye shadow to make your eyes really pop and to blow-wave your hair so it looks just perfect. If you’re not confident in doing it all yourself, book an appointment at a MAC counter before your shoot. You will thank yourself afterwards. I promise!

Accessories

As a fine art editorial photographer, I am here to tell your story through light and beautiful images. Accessories reflect your tastes and who you are. I love to encourage my clients, both men and women, to wear bangles, belts, hats, necklaces and earrings that they love. These details help to build a picture of who you are and make for gorgeous shots that will be completely unique to you.

You

Relax! I meet so many people who tell me that they photograph badly. A professional photographer is there to do the job of capturing your special moments. I’m there to make sure you look great, shooting from angles that compliment you and using the most flattering light to create images that you will treasure.  So focus of having fun and enjoying the process. You’re going to look great!
