Rome, Italy | Travel Photography

27th May 2016 by MaxeenKim Leave a Comment

Rome, Travel Photography, Maxeen Kim Photography

Almost exactly two years ago, I was on a plane making my way to Italy’s Eternal City; Rome. Given I have always had a love affair with art, history and architecture, to say I was excited was an understatement.

Arriving in the afternoon, I made my way to the hotel, unpacked, refreshed and was out the door to explore the area a little bit. My first order of business was getting hold of a gelato, closely followed by finding a beautiful spot to enjoy it whilst watching the sun set.

The next day I approached Rome in much the same way as I approach every city I visit – I walked it… and it was a long walk! It’s my personal belief that you only truly get to see and discover a city by foot. But in this case, Rome just seemed to be endless – and with nearly 3,000 years of globally influential art, architecture and culture on display, I didn’t want to miss any of it.

My trip to the Italian capital lasted 4 days in total and after my ridiculously tiring first day of walking, I got clever on my remaining days and used the public transport.

The city is gorgeous. An mix and match of old and new. Ruins, thousands of years old, next to town houses. Horse drawn carriages pulled up next to the big sites along side taxi’s. From it’s super stylist policemen in their skinny jeans, to the fact that even the most crumbling and old windows are decorated with beautiful blooms in window boxes… On every street and around every corner you will find little reminders of the fact that you are walking on the cobbles that helped shape history. It’s an amazing thing.

And my top tips for visiting?

  1. Take comfortable shoes. Rome is big. The sites themselves are big. You will be walking A LOT!
  2. Plan ahead. Do the city in sections. Pick a few things in close proximity, use public transport and do them all on the same day. You don’t want to miss anything out.
  3. Set aside a whole day for the Vatican City. Get up early and go straight there – there will be a line to get in. Don’t oversleep or you may end up spending the day in the line instead of exploring.
  4. Eat GELATO! Just do it. You won’t be disappointed. Just don’t blame me if you put on weight – this tip is to be used at your own discretion.

Maxeen captured our dream day from start to finish on the enchanting island of Ithaca, an island that is extremely close to our hearts.

Max has an eye for small details and perfect locations. Max made us feel so comfortable in front of her lens, we almost forgot she was there, which made our photographs so authentic and filled with the emotions of our day. Her soft style of photography was perfect for our special day and added to the dreaminess of the occasion.

Max was super friendly and so professional and it was an absolute pleasure having her as our wedding photographer. We are so thrilled with the photographs which we received within 6 weeks after our wedding and we have no idea how we are going to choose a limited number of photographs for our album.

Not only did we gain a photographer to capture our wedding (and all future events which we may wish to have on Ithaca), but we have gained a friend and we so look forward to seeing her next time we are in Greece.

Sunset Couple portrait at their Lefkada wedding

We first met Maxeen a year before we got married and after meeting her we knew we would want her to be our photographer; her enthusiasm and attention to the specific details of our day won us over and we were not disappointed with our choice.

Maxeen also organised an beautiful engagement shoot for us in the hills of Lefkada. It was great to see another side to the island and produced some lovely intimate photos.

We are so happy with all the photos from our wedding and engagement. Maxeen has managed to capture all of our guests as well as so many of those tender moments. There were definitely tears when we viewed them for the first time!!! Her keen eye for capturing the little details of the day has produced photo's that feel so unique and special to us and our day.

She was completely committed to getting the best shots of us and all the pictures we wanted. It wasn't 'just another wedding' for her. You can clearly see it's a passion and something she loves!! Unbelievable service! Xx

Maxeen travelled all the way to Scotland for our wedding and was amazing from start to finish. She was such a lovely friendly person with great advice. We loved chatting to her and felt like we have known her for ages. We have just got our photographs and I can't stop looking at them! The photo's are amazing. I would highly recommend her!

We met Maxeen in Mauritius a day after we got engaged and she took the most gorgeous photos of us on the most beautiful beach at sunset. She's super amazing, awesome to be around and helps the camera shy to be comfortable! We hope to have her as our wedding photographer! x

Maxeen covered our wedding on Ithaca, in Greece. She was professional, supportive and a grace under pressure. She captured our day perfectly. I would highly recommend Max if you are looking for a skilled artist, with an eye for details to capture your most special day.
