There are many things that make holidaying on a Greek island amazing… There are stunning beaches, you’ll get to swim is clear blue water, you will definitely get a tan (wear sun-cream!) and you will eat more feta cheese than is probably healthy.
But travelling on your own is quite different to travelling with friends so, I have made a list of a few things to try that will definitely make your holiday more fun. I did them all (as I was reminded by a friend I made that, ‘You only live once!’) and I had the best holiday I have ever been on.
So if you are the adventurous type who likes to go out on their own and get a bit lost just to see what happens… This is my list of 3 things to try when holidaying on a Greek island.
- Find a traditional restaurant and give the waiter permission to surprise you with dinner. This is a great way of trying something new and authentic (obviously if you have any allergies, you might want to mention those) and you might even discover your new favourite dish!
- Try the local alcohol. Yes, you will probably spend the next 10 minutes coughing up your lungs as it is definitely going to be extremely strong, but I guarantee you will make a couple of new friends this way as you’re probably going to look hilarious whilst coughing.
- When on a Greek island, it is always good to attempt island hopping. It would be RUDE not to!
While on Ithaca I made friends and one afternoon we got on a boat and went to Fiscardo, a village on the island of Kefalonia for lunch. It was an unplanned trip – the best ones always are – and involved cliff jumping, snorkelling and many ridiculous selfies before lunch.
So the best bit of advice I could possibly give you about visiting a Greek island? Be spontaneous! Because as my friend, Makis, told me, ‘You only live once’.
